Dance Portfolio

William Joel Hernandez Abreu was born in Cuba and has been dancing from an early age. Having graduated from the School of Ballet and Performance at Jose Maria Romero Escuela National de Show & Expectaculos, which he attended from the age of nine he trained in Ballet, Latin and International Dance.

William has over 20 years of experience working in the dance and the music industry.  William has lived in Norway and moved to the UK in the late 2000. He ran his own dance school at Que Pasa, Southampton (UK) from 2004 to 2009.

He has contributed to a variety of national and international Dance Conferences and Festivals in Cuba, Spain, Poland and the UK. William is currently a salsa instructor and performer in a variety of Latin dances and most recently he has looked into the dance style of the Jive and Lindy Hop from the 1940’s and 1950’s.

A Senior Dance Instructor and Popular Teacher, William brings both his professional skills and unique style and choreography to his classes combined with the styles of authentic Afro-Cuban Culture.

William regularly performs and teaches advance Latin Dances for Salsa Congresses (Bournemouth) / Cubashe Dance Promotions (Brighton) / Cuban Vibes Company (London), which are national and international dance events throughout Europe.

He has also taken classes for The Rueda Congress, which is a Norwegian based dance company that toured throughout the UK. He has been able to combine his passion for dance and music.

William’s professional practises demonstrate his professional standing within the dance community.

In addition to working with professional Dance Congresses and Festivals he has extended his portfolio to working with young people in performance and dance choreography throughout the South West and South East.

He currently teaches Salsa dance at Southampton University, as part of the University’s Student Union Salsa Association and Societies.In 1992.

William was awarded a Diploma in Professional Latin Dancing and a Diploma in Teaching Cuban Dance from the school Jose Maria Romero Escuela National de Show & Expectaculos.

William has since expanded his knowledge in music and so received a Diploma in Music Production and Technology in 2012 from Bournemouth & Poole College, Dorset, UK studying on a part-time basis.

He has also trained professionally in Athletics and Tae-Kwon-Do and studied a module in Architecture.

Performance - Dance

Due to the ever-growing demand and popularity of Latin dancing here in the UK he has thus focused his portfolio on Salsa dancing by extended his participation with a variety of classes and activities. He is currently a senior instructor practising in Latino dances such as rumba, mambo, cha cha cha, reggeaton, zumba and salsa. A popular and well-respected teacher William teaches both beginners, intermediate and advanced classes.

Having graduated from the School of Ballet and Performance at Jose Maria Romero Escuela National de Show & Expectaculos, his dancing career began with an education from Tony Menendez; who is a wellknown choreographer, dancer and Cuban actor. And so William has danced with Rosa Maria Diaz, Elena Martinez Suavez and Carmen Sosa Hernandez.

William has performed in some of Cuba’s most beautiful venues including theatres, cabaret clubs, hotels and entertainment spots. This includes William representing Cuba in a number of Dance Festivals in Miami, USA.

Other such venues include Teatro American (Cuba) / Teatro Karl Marx (Cuba) / Cayo Coco (Cuba) / Cayo Largo (Cuba) / Club Tropicana (Cuba) / Hotel Riviera (Cuba) / Salsa Congress (Bournemouth) / Cubashe Dance Promotions (Brighton) / Cuban Vibes Company (London), amongst other.

Professional Practise

For the last 15 years William has focused his work in the UK. He has extended his work profile to include working with young groups and Universities in the South West and South East.

William has supported his fellow artists and local communities through a variety of experiences. During the summer school at the Arts University Bournemouth he performed and danced for the students as well as teach at a local dance school in Southampton for children aged 6-11.

Along with choreographing and teaching with local dance schools, major Congresses and Festivals William also instructs dance routines for different elements of stage shows and theatre productions.

William has performed and instructed at 20 events here in the UK in 2014 alone.
